When life throws unexpected challenges (car accidents, a broken hip) or even joyous moments like the birth of a child, one of the most tangible ways to support loved ones is by organizing or participating in a meal train. A meal train is more than just a food delivery; it’s a heartfelt gesture that says, “I care, and I’m here to help.”
The Impact of a Meal Train
Having personally experienced the benefits of a meal train after two accidents and the birth of Little Belle, I can attest to how meaningful this support can be. During those times, when my family was overwhelmed with the demands of recovery, the meal train was a lifeline. It alleviated the stress of meal planning, allowed us to focus on healing and bonding, and gave us the comfort of knowing that our community cared. The quick visits from friends delivering meals also brought a much-needed connection during those challenging times. The relief it brought to us was immeasurable.
Why I Always Participate in Meal Trains
Because of the meal train’s profound impact on my family, I prioritize participating whenever I’m invited to join one. It’s my way of paying forward the kindness and support I received. And the joy I feel in being able to help in a meaningful way is indescribable. Knowing firsthand how much it can help, I prepare meals that are comforting, delicious, and easy for the recipient to enjoy.
My Go-To Menu
I keep my recipes simple yet satisfying when contributing to a meal train. The simplicity of these recipes makes it easy for anyone to participate. My go-to menu includes:
- Doritos Taco Bake: A classic in our home. It mixes crescent rolls, cheese, taco meat and Doritos into one filling meal.
- Chocolate Chip Cookies: I always send baked cookies or some form of dessert.
- Cinnamon Coffee Cake: During one of our trains, a loved one included breakfast for the next day. I thought that was incredible, and I now do the same with every meal train meal I deliver.
I always label each item with its name and include a menu with cooking or reheating instructions. Additionally, I provide paper products and utensils to make cleanup easy for the family. I’ve linked Canva templates to my menu and food labels below. Feel free to use these for your next meal train meal.

A meal train is more than just delivering food; it provides comfort, care, and a sense of community to those who need it most. Whether you’re the organizer or a participant, your efforts can make a difference to those in need.
